What are the most common causes of pain in the elbow joints?
The most common causes are overuse injuries such as tennis elbow and golfer's elbow. Arthritis, bursitis, fractures, and nerve compression can also cause elbow pain.
What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow is an irritation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. Despite its name, it affects many people who have never played tennis. Repetitive gripping, lifting, or twisting motions are common causes.
What's the difference between tennis elbow and golfer's elbow?
Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside of the elbow. Golfer's elbow causes pain on the inside of the elbow. Both involve irritated tendons but affect different parts of the joint.
Can elbow pain heal without surgery?
Yes. Many elbow conditions improve with rest, physical therapy, braces, medication, or injections. Surgery is usually considered only when conservative treatment is unsuccessful or the injury is severe.
Why do my ring finger and little finger feel numb?
Numbness in these fingers is often caused by cubital tunnel syndrome, which occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes compressed at the elbow.
How long does tennis elbow take to heal?
Many people improve within several weeks to a few months with proper treatment. Recovery depends on the severity of the injury and on following your treatment plan.
What is elbow bursitis?
Elbow bursitis is swelling of the fluid-filled sac that cushions the back of the elbow. It may develop after repeated pressure, injury, or infection.
When should I see an orthopedic specialist for elbow pain?
You should seek evaluation if elbow pain lasts more than a few days, limits movement, causes weakness or numbness, or develops after an injury.
